Sagrada Família Dress Code, Bags and Security: What to Bring

A practical packing check for your timed visit: what to wear, which belongings to leave behind, and why a tower locker is not a luggage-storage service.

An entry ticket does not remove the basilica's clothing and security requirements. The easiest preparation is to separate three questions: is your outfit suitable for a church, can security inspect your belongings easily, and do you have the documents needed to use your ticket? This guide focuses on those checks rather than ticket prices or sightseeing routes.

The short answer: choose covered shoulders and mid-thigh or longer clothing

The basilica's published purchase conditions require tops to cover the shoulders. Its visitor rules prohibit transparent clothing and swimwear, and require trousers and skirts to reach at least mid-thigh. You do not need to invent a stricter knee-length rule, but choosing longer shorts or a loose skirt removes uncertainty about the length. Footwear is required; visitors may not enter barefoot.

  • Wear an opaque top with shoulder coverage, or bring a light layer that provides it.
  • Choose shorts, trousers or a skirt that comfortably reach at least mid-thigh when worn normally.
  • Remove a leisure hat inside the nave and museum; exceptions apply for religious, health or belief-related reasons.
  • Leave swimwear, attention-seeking costumes and transparent garments out of your visit outfit.

Can you bring a backpack into the Sagrada Família?

Bags and backpacks are checked at the entrance. The venue recommends not bringing a rucksack to make that process simpler; that is different from a blanket statement that every small bag is banned from the basilica. Pack lightly and make the contents easy to inspect. Do not rely on a third-party claim about a universal maximum bag size unless that limit appears in your current booking instructions.

A suitcase needs a separate plan

There are no suitcase lockers at the basilica. If your visit falls between hotel checkout and a train or flight, arrange storage before heading to the entrance. Confirm that the storage location will still be open when you return, and keep your ticket, phone and identification with you. Arriving with luggage and hoping security will look after it is not a workable backup.

Tower lockers are only for the tower visit

Bags and rucksacks cannot go up the towers for safety reasons. The available lockers are for temporary storage during that part of the visit, and belongings must be collected as soon as you return. They are not an all-day cloakroom, and tower access must be included in the ticket you actually book.

Considering an upgrade? Check the practical limitations before choosing it.

Security, food and identification

Expect checks of your personal belongings even with an advance ticket or guided tour. Dangerous items are not permitted. The current official FAQ also excludes food and drinks brought into the site, so do not assume that a picnic or outside beverage will be accepted. If you need an exception for an essential item, ask the venue before travelling rather than relying on permission at the gate.

The basilica states that entry requires official photo identification. Bring the document that matches your named booking and any evidence needed for a discount. Keep the ticket downloaded and your phone charged; finding an email while your bag is being checked is an avoidable complication.

Your final check before leaving the hotel

  • Suitable clothing and a lightweight covering layer if needed.
  • Downloaded ticket, official photo ID and any discount documentation.
  • Only essential belongings; separate arrangements for suitcases.
  • Earphones if using audio: the daily 9:00–10:00 quiet hour requires quiet and headphone use.
  • The correct arrival instructions for your booking, including any guide meeting point.
